Technical drawing – Culture and society – Art

We explain what technical drawing is and the types of graphics carried out. Also, what draws illustrations do you use

What is technical drawing?

The technical drawing is a branch of the drawTechnicalthe system that graphically represents one or more objects to provide helpful information for possible and consequent analysis that will allow an upcoming construction and maintenance of the object.

Technical drawing is the graphic language used in the technicalunicate within the framework of industrial and design activist global ideas to details like the framework to technological content.

Technical drawing has also been defined as the system of graphic representation of existing objects or prototypes according to standards and conventions pre-established by regulatory institutions. This allows a precise and clear description of the dimensions, shapes, and characteristics of these material objectives material objects, s.

It should be noted drawing is often opposed to artistic pictures. While the first is intended to express personal impressions or sensations, influenced by imagination and individual experiences, which is why it is eminently subjective, technical drawing aims to be objective and represent the objects as best as possible as they are, in an accurate way, to provide inaccurate technical information for its technical analysis, eventually helping its design, construction, and maintenance.

Regarding the history of drawing, we cannot fail to mention the first Greek mathematicians, such as Thales, Pythagoras, and Euclid, who laid the foundations of the so-called geometry of space, fundamental in this discipline. During the Renaissance, the contributions of Brunelleschi and the famous and versatile Leonardo da Vinci stand out.

Schemes, sketches, diagrams, and plans are modalities of technical drawing that contain specifications corresponding to measurements of length, height, angles, surface, etc. The primary views in the technical drawing are the plan (view from above), the elevation, which can be the front or side, and that of sections or cuts in two projections. The definition of scales helps the interpretation of these representations.

Types of technical drawing

Within the technical drawing, some specific types are included, such as:

  • Architectural, technical drawing. It encompasses different graphic representations, which are used to make plans for the future construction of buildings, houses, bridges, institutes, etc.
  • Mechanical, technical drawing. Its use is required to realize plans representing parts of a machine, automobiles, airplanes, motorcycles, and industrial machinery.
  • Electrical technical drawing. It is used to represent simple electrical installations, such as those of a home, or rather complex ones, such as those of industry. The latter usually clearly reports the location of the main panel, the switches, and the outlets, among others.
  • Geological technical drawing. Used in geology and geography to represent the various layers of the earth through a symbology that allows knowing the minerals found in said layer.
  • Urban drawing. It represents the development and infrastructure of cities and other urban centers, both existing and in the project stage.
  • Topographic drawing. It is dedicated to capturing on a map the main characteristics of a piece of land, such as height, slope, the presence of natural or artificial accidents, elevations, and contour lines.
  • Technical drawing of the stand and art installations. It aims to represent all clean facilities: barepresentsink, etc. In turn, it also means the location of external and internal pipes.
  • Electronic technical drawing. It is based on the representation of graphics and electronic sketches of current circulation circuits.
Technical drawing of metallic constructions. Represents plans for the construction of blacksmith structures.

The technical drawing can be captured on different supports (paper, acetate, passe-partout) and is generally carried out on a board, with the help of elements such as a T-ruler, square, angle, ruler, compass, and marker. Through the development of programs such as AutoCAD, for example, information technology has contributed significantly to the development of technical drawing.

Lines used in technical drawing

The line appears within the branch of technical drawing, and a fundamental characteristic of it is essential to illustrate the different objects. There are, then, different types of cables; among the main ones are:

Guideline. It indicates a part of the object to which a note refers.
Break line. Used to represent a long piece that is shortened.
Invisible line. Dashed lines represent corners or vertices of objects hidden from perception.
Flat cut line. It is used to describe where an imaginary amount was made.
